The first center to win NBA Defensive Player of the Year
The NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year began in 1982–83. The first winner was guard Sidney Moncrief; the first center to win was Utah’s Mark Eaton in 1984–85, powered by elite rim protection and blocks. He won again in 1988–89.
At 7'4", Eaton excelled with positioning, timing, and shot-path anticipation—one of the 1980s’ most intimidating paint anchors.
In an era centered on packed paint and rim defense, his value was maximized. As switching, shows, and perimeter pressure grew later, DPOY evaluation evolved from pure rim-protection to a blend of rim defense, mobility, and help coverage.
From Olajuwon and Mutombo to Howard and Gasol, centers defined their eras in different ways. Eaton’s two trophies mark an early pillar of that lineage.
Consistent fundamentals and focus determine steady performance.
